What is Emergent Curriculum?
The environment is the foundation of our curriculum in Early
Childhood. Classrooms are designed to be child-centered, attractive
and interesting. Learning centers are set up in the classrooms
so that small groups and individual children can explore different
materials related to the study of math, science, art, and language
while teachers observe and interact with the children and the
materials. Other centers that foster our student's learning are
the block center, the drama or housekeeping center, the library
corner, and our trike area.
Part of the role of the teacher is one of observer. Teachers
assess our students' abilities and plan activities and centers
to challenge the students' critical thinking skills. Through
listening closely to our students at play we learn of their interests.
Emergent curriculum describes the projects and themes that classrooms
embark on that have been inspired by the children's interests.
With the support of the teacher's planning this emergent curriculum
can last for several weeks and cover many different curricular
areas.
Examples of Emergent Curriculum can be found in Documented Projects.
